Journey Style Guided Group Journeys Rocky Mountains Northern Rockies Tribes Trails : Journey Highlights

Explore Northern Plains Indian culture on an extraordinary, scenic excursion through the beautiful Rocky Mountains. You’ll travel to Blackfeet, North Piegan, Blood, and Salish-Kootenai communities in the US and Canada to discover the distinctive culture of each group. Along the way you’ll attend a powwow, and visit historical tipi encampments, sun dance sites, and pishkuns—including the haunting World Heritage Site of Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump.
Native American historians have said that the Rocky Mountain landscape shaped Blackfeet communication about travel, natural resources, creation, and moral direction. You’ll create your own expressions and impressions as you traverse that landscape yourself, walking, river rafting, and otherwise exploring the magnificent land that has influenced human culture across time.

  • Indian Nations: Come away with a full perspective on the historical and cultural foundations of contemporary dynamics and subjects in Indian Country.
  • Powwow: In July, attend North American Indian Days in Browning, and in August, catch the Heart Butte powwow. Both gatherings fill your ears and eyes with colorful dancing and drumming. These are wonderful events, and authentic tribal celebrations.
  • Great Active Outdoors: Marvel at the scenery of Glacier National Park, and enjoy a half-day raft trip on the beautiful Flathead River, and breathtaking drive over the Going-to-the-Sun Road.
  • Wildlife: Look for mountain goats at a mineral lick, and watch for grizzly bears, eagles, bighorn sheep, elk, and other species.

This intercultural exploration will reveal age-old insights that carry meaning for today. We will be entrepreneurial and flexible throughout the adventure. Who knows what unforeseen opportunities we will discover as we go! —Bill Bryan, co-founder, Off the Beaten Path
