Trip Motif Hiking Walking New Walking Through Peru : Journey Highlights

It won’t take long for people to discover this alternate, lodge-to-lodge trail to Machu Picchu, where four newly built inns welcome travelers at the end of the day’s trek. On this OBP journey, your bilingual local guides are experienced mountain travelers with detailed knowledge of history as well as insight into present-day Quechua culture. Before your 4-day trek you’ll acclimate to the elevation by exploring Cusco (the former capital of the Incan civilization which holds tenaciosly to its roots), visiting the Sacred Valley, and experiencing contemporary Quechua culture.

  • Trekking: Enjoy fully supported and catered trekking, covering 3 to 9 miles a day.
  • History/archaeology: Visit incredibly preserved pre-Incan, Incan, and Spanish colonial architectural sites with a guide who will provide fascinating historical perspective.
  • Cultural immersion: Connect with Peruvians eager to share the beauty of their country, and enjoy performances by local Quechua musicians and dancers.
  • Following your journey: Go whitewater rafting on the Class III/IV Urumbamba River, take a mountain bike or horseback ride, or forget variety and keep on trekking.

“Follow the footsteps of ancient Incans on the lightly traveled Salcantay trail, approaching the breathtaking (literally) Machu Picchu from the west. This is an extraordinary way to experience a true wonder of the ancient world.” —Barbara Mall, OBP Travel Advisor
