How custom-made travel works at Off the Beaten Path

We’ve been tailoring custom journeys for clients since our very inception in the mid-1980s! The process is all about connecting the interests of the travelers with the best that a given destination has to offer. To achieve this, we rely upon good ol’ fashioned conversation! Our geographically focused travel designer love to meet new people and learn about their interests for travel. Understanding your goals informs the process immensely and serves as the foundation for the development of a bespoke travel experience for you and yours.

The trip detailed on this web page is a sample of something we’ve done for other clients over the years. In order to start the process of designing your own custom travel experience, just call us at (800) 445-2995 and ask to speak with one of our Travel Advisors. After a bit of time on the phone, you will then have the opportunity to connect with one of our travel designers.

The entire planning process is very personalized and works in an iterative fashion until a final, perfect trip has been created. We then secure all of the lodging, activities, and guided experiences associated with your trip and send along abundant trip materials capturing these details – and much more about your travels!

Itinerary

Days 1-2: San Francisco

Welcome to California! Get the lay of the City by the Bay on a private guided half-day bike tour, then consult your custom OBP Journey Guidebook for other ideas, like Fisherman’s Wharf, hiking in Golden Gate Park, or a trolley tour.

Days 3-6: Yosemite National Park

Pick up your rental car and make your way to beautiful and historic Yosemite National Park. Get off on the right foot on a privately guided hike with a naturalist guide. You’ll learn so much, and this will set you up perfectly for further explorations on your own. Don’t miss El Cap, Half Dome, Ansel Adams Gallery, Tuolumne Meadows, awe-inspiring waterfalls, and giant sequoias.

Days 7-9: Carmel-by-the-Sea

This storybook city on the beach has it all: scenery, trails, historic sites, galleries, restaurants—and the nearby fabulous Monterey Bay Aquarium. A highlight for this portion of the trip will surely be a morning of privately guided tide-pooling with a marine biologist and behind-the-scenes aquarium visit. Other great experiences could include coastal hiking and sea kayaking in the wildlife-rich kelp beds off Cannery Row.

Day 10: San Francisco for departures home

You’ll leave with a list of things to do and places to see on your next visit back.

Okay, they were orange slices. But have you tasted oranges in Morocco? They create, to borrow writer Jeff Greenwald’s phrase, a kind of citrus ecstasy. […]

Two years ago my wife and I had the good fortune to tour New Mexico for a week in the winter season. The highlights resonate with me still: Santa Fe’s illuminating museums (we were especially enchanted by the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture) and exhilarating galleries, the transporting chapel at Chimayo, the extraordinary rock […]

Alaskan Wildlife, Cabin View

Fog Lifts “In this weather, you’d step on a moose before you’d see one.” Larry Benz was standing with his hands on his hips, squinting out the glass doors of his hand-built cabin at the northern boundary of Chugach National Forest, Alaska. The usual, sweeping vista of yellow and chartreuse pines was veiled in a […]
